Cold Weather

Cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. It's a common belief that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it's untrue. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside.

Dalhart Animal Control and Shelter

The City of Dalhart Animal Control provides for the safety and well being of animals within the city limits of Dalhart while enforcing state and local laws.  The city employ's two animal control officers under the supervision of Police Chief Conner.

The Dalhart Animal Control Shelter is an entity of the Dalhart Police Department and the City of Dalhart.  The facility is not a privately run facility.  On occasions Animal control will conduct business with private entities and reputable no-kill shelters or transport companies.  These entities MUST be vetted through the police department and go through an approval process.  Anyone wishing to conduct business with the City of Dalhart Animal Shelter must contact Chief Conner at (806) 244-5546 and proper paperwork completed in accordance with the law before any animal is release to them.



  • Long standing ordinances allow up to four dogs per household under a leash law.  A kennel is required for 5 or more dogs.
  • Please keep your pets in your yard or on a leash at all times.  Our Animal Control Officers pick up dogs that roam the streets and citations will be issued for dogs at large.
  • The City encourages the spaying and neutering of you animals
  • Dogs must wear a city tag, available at the veterinary clinics in Dalhart or from the Animal Control Officer.  The animal permit fee is $5.00 per animal.
  • Rules regarding the raising of other animals vary from neighborhood to neighborhood
  • Fell free to call Code Compliance or Animal Control if you have any questions
  • The Rita Blanca Lake trails are City property and dogs must be kept on a leash while accompanying you on your hike.
