Sergeant Erica Trevino of the Dalhart Police Department has been awarded the 2023 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Public Service. Each year, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement awards peace officers who exceed the normal expectations of job performance through acts of professional achievement, public service, or valor.
Sergeant Trevino is the first deaf female police officer in Texas, and the second in the United States, and has spoken to
students across the state who are deaf and hard-of-hearing to inspire them to forge their own path and show what can be accomplished. Sergeant Trevino also developed and organized the community policing initiative Blue Santa, which collected gifts for children in need. Most recently, Sergeant Trevino organized a Child Abuse Prevention t-shirt fundraiser for the Dallam-Hartley County Child Welfare Board.
“Dalhart is lucky to have an officer as capable and committed as Sergeant Trevino is. We are all proud of what she’s done and for winning this award. She is a true public servant for our community,” said Mayor Justin Moore. A ceremony to award Sergeant Trevino will be held at the State Capitol building in Austin in June.
